Career Summary

John went into the law at the age of 16 straight from school. He worked initially as a junior litigation clerk for Stevensons Solicitors in London and over the years built up his experience working for a number of London's pre-eminent litigation law firms.

In 1984 he joined Holman Fenwick and Willen as assistant to the head of the department handling marine personal injury cases in the UK and overseas.

In 1988 he moved to Davies Arnold Cooper where, in London, he was assistant to the then head of the common law department, handling volume personal injury cases. He led a team dealing with all of the employers liability cases for a major British airline and acted for insurers/P"&"I clubs all over the world, specialising in investigation of maritime accidents. He also gained considerable experience of produce liability and professional indemnity cases.

In 1993 John moved to the Manchester office of Davies Arnold Cooper to become head of their insurance litigation department and, subsequently, he was national head of the common law department.

In 1999 John joined Merricks solicitors (subsequently Merricks LLP) in their Birmingham office and following the internal restructuring, he become head of the national personal injury department. In 2001 the practice became a Limited Liability Partnership whereupon John become a member of the firm's management board and in 2002 head of the national litigation department.

In March 2004 John left Merricks LLP to set up Webster O'Brien with Peta O'Brien and Wayne Thompson. The firm commenced trading in April 2004.
